Mitsubishi Electric show a 155-inch sized OLED Television display, which consists of small sized OLED parts (estimated size is a 10×10cm square unit) at the Ceatec 2009. The large scale OLED display has been developed for digital signage and monitors placed at public spaces.

Thanks to the modular system the large screens can be curved in large installations, to follow the curvature of a building, wall or wherever else it’s installed. Because OLED technology used in the creation of this system, brightness is said to be three times greater than in regular LCD TVs. Organic compounds in the pixels degrade over time, however, with the set’s life rated at 20,000 hours of continuous use.

The pixel pitch is about 3mm. But when watched from a distance of more than 2m, the display looked fine enough for me. The pixel pitch of large-size LED displays is normally 4 to 6mm. There are some LED displays with a pixel pitch of 3mm, but they use many LEDs and are too expensive to become popular, Mitsubishi Electric said.

All about the next television generation OLED-TV Television (organic light emitting diode)
The OLED technology especially Tvs look great! They offer high contrast, sharpness, and bright eye-popping color that take high definition imagery to new peaks.
Their fast refresh rates also make them extremely attractive for the emerging 3D Television market. OLED-Televisons are the next HDTV technology.
With improved manufacturing and higher volume production, even the price of OLED Panels can soon be in line with the incumbents.

Why will OLED compete against LCD and Plasma in the next few years?

Organic LED TVs in the future will be cheaper to make

can be super-slim

promises better quality pictures

are more eco-friendly

should be unbreakable

are more flexible

are the future

Lifetime

OLED Displays are emissive, similar to plasma displays and cathode ray tubes. They degrade over time. LCDs are transmissive displays that operate by filtering a backlight. LCDs typically last as long as their backlights, wihich also degrade over time or can fail catastrophically. The most Organic Displays on the market does have lifetimes exceeding 50.000 hours. The future is bright also for OLED lifetime many companies introduce new materials which bring us lifetimes 2-3 times greater than typical LCDs.

Price

For most small high performance display applications, OLEDs are today competitively priced because they are built in factories of comparable size to LCDs.
LCD makers are still using the same small substrate factories to build the larger displays. As OLED manufacturers add factories with larger substrates, their plant level costs should reach parity with LCD Display technology. Organic Displays are likely to be less expensive than comparably sized LCDs.

The first OLED Televison in the world was the XEL-1 from Sony!
